Harrisburg Area YMCA Youth Programs include quality child care, swimming lessons, the Teen Achievers Club, health and fitness classes and wellness areas, summer camps for all ages, and a wide variety of other activities that appeal to all ages. The programs also include services and initiatives focused on youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The YMCA Center for Healthy Living conducts a Health Equity Tour across Pennsylvania focused on access to health resources, and the Community Action Tour travels across Pennsylvania educating local communities about essential health information, providing health screenings and services, and distributing resources to those in need.
The Harrisburg Area YMCA was founded in 1854, and on December 12, 1854, the Harrisburg YMCA was officially established as the eighth YMCA in the United States. The Harrisburg Area YMCA’s swim lesson program celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2006. The Harrisburg YMCA was the first YMCA in the country to provide lodging, offering safe and affordable housing for young men. The Harrisburg Area YMCA serves more than 50,000 members and 200,000 individuals a year and grants over $500,000 worth of scholarships to families in the Harrisburg area. Its mission is to provide services to aid in the spiritual, mental and physical development of each person, enabling them to be beneficial and contributing members of society. The YMCA Center for Healthy Living was founded in 2016. The Camp Curtin YMCA opened its doors to the Harrisburg Area Food Pantry in 2024, giving the pantry a new home and strengthening the Y’s role as a hub for community support and care. The YMCA Center for Healthy Living collaborates with community health partners, and YMCA staff work with food banks and pantries to distribute food to those attending the Health Equity Tour events. The Community Action Tour is made possible through a partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Health and aims to connect community members to local resources so they can maintain a relationship and have continued access to the resources they need.
