Pittsburgh's oldest and finest children's day camp, Camp Deer Creek has been operating since 1933. A registered nurse is on staff daily during operating hours, and American Red Cross trained and certified lifeguards are with campers in the pool area at all times. Camp Deer Creek provides swim towels, which are washed with bleach and hot water each evening, and asks that towels from home not be sent. Camp Deer Creek provides a hot lunch daily, included in tuition, and is not peanut or tree nut free and offers PB&J sandwiches as an alternative to the daily lunch. Personal electronic devices such as cell phones, watches with internet access, tablets, and video game systems are not permitted during the camp day, and any cell phone brought for emergency purposes is held in the camp office and returned during the bus ride home. Campers entering first grade and above who pass a deep water test administered every Monday may swim in the deep end, and those who do not must swim in the shallow end. Campers are grouped by grade into named groups: Crickets & Fireflies (Purple Group), Braves (Red Group), Pioneers (Yellow Group), Rangers (Green Group), Apaches (Blue Group), Chieftains (Orange Group), and Frontiersmen (Gray Group). Suggested items for camp include a bathing suit, a bag for a wet suit to return home, spray sunscreen, creek shoes, a sweatshirt or jacket on rainy days, and an extra set of clothes, with all items labeled with the camper’s first and last name. All daily medication must be in the original labeled bottle with information completed on the camper's portal, and EpiPens or inhalers should be in a labeled zip-lock bag kept at the nurse’s station. Riding gear should be brought each day until allotted horseback riding lessons are completed, and riders must have long pants and boots with a well-defined heel, while the camp provides a helmet and other riding equipment. If campers pack lunch, it should be clearly marked with first name, last name, and group name and may be kept in refrigerated coolers until lunchtime. A pre-camp Open House is scheduled for Saturday, May 30, 2026, rain or shine, between 1:00pm and 4:00pm.
