Pocono Plateau Camp and Retreat Center is a year-round Christian camp and retreat center that offers week-long summer camp programs for children, youth, and families, and retreat options for groups, organizations, and schools. The high ropes course is reserved for those older than 16 years old, while low ropes courses provide ground-level team building activities. The site includes a nature center that focuses on trees, plants, and animals in the local area.
Pocono Plateau is a ministry of the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference of The United Methodist Church and partners with United Methodist churches and agencies as part of the UMCRM Foundational Principles. Its mission states that it exists to provide welcoming spaces immersed in natural surroundings for all to experience the Spirit of God and love of Jesus through community, recreation, and reflection, and that everyone is welcome regardless of beliefs, faith, or denomination.
The program’s history includes the purchase of approximately 750 acres in December 1944 and the first summer camp program in 1946. An Instrument of Cooperation with the Philadelphia Conference was adopted in 1962, and in 1971 the property became the possession of the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference with a full-time resident Director hired. Since 1991, challenge course areas have been constructed, with Carlson Lodge built in 2000, Springer Center – Dining Hall/Camp Store in 2003, a Maintenance Shop in 2004, major renovations to Moore Lodge and relocation of the Craft Room and Game Room in 2006, replacement of Adventure Site platform tents with rustic cabins including an infirmary in 2013, and a Bath House completed in 2014.
Accreditation is referenced by the label “ACCREDITATION” on the site. Parent and group testimonials describe children socializing with others who share their faith, playing games, and opening up during camp, cabins that feel homey, a nice lake, a dining hall with volunteer cooking staff who make food that is described as great, and retreats that include outdoor recreation, crafts, teambuilding games, and meals with a wide variety of options, along with scripture and gospel principles included in team building wrap-up discussions.
