About

The Lutheran Camping Corporation of Central Pennsylvania offers summer camp, adventure trip camps, sports camps, outdoor wilderness camps, canoe camps, bike camps, and traditional small group resident camp programs. The program also offers retreat programs, outdoor education experiences, a monthly Dinner Church worship gathering centered around a shared meal, and seasonal events such as Advent/Christmas in the Barn. In addition, it is involved in growing fresh vegetables to help feed hungry people in Lancaster County.

The Lutheran Camping Corporation of Central Pennsylvania states that its mission is “The Church in a place and time apart where Christ’s love is experienced and faith is renewed.” It provides summer camping programs for young people at Nawakwa and Kirchenwald and retreat programs for all ages throughout the year. Its facilities are available for rent by retreat groups, including church groups, school groups, families, individuals, and other organizations, and outdoor education experiences for groups are possible. The organization is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and Lutheran Outdoor Ministries and is identified as a Reconciling In Christ Organization. It states that outdoor ministry experiences are growth experiences where participants will grow spiritually, mature emotionally, and gain confidence to lead faithfully, and that campers are encouraged to be active Christian disciples who live and proclaim the Gospel. The organization states that it extends its hands to invite, love, and affirm those of all different identities and backgrounds including race, ethnicity, origin, religion, creed, ability, economic status, orientation, and gender identity and expression. Nawakwa has been an outdoor gathering place for Lutherans since 1929, and The Wittel Charitable Trust was established on August 26, 1983. The Wittel Farm is described as a working farm and a place for persons and groups seeking to deepen, enrich, and renew their relationship with God, providing solitude, prayer, spiritual formation, community, and the study of scripture, and its Growing Project focuses on feeding hungry people in Lancaster County. The camp averages over 400 campers a summer at Kirchenwald, with a focus on adventure trip camps and growth through challenge.
