Harrisburg Area YMCA Youth Programs include quality child care, swimming lessons, the Teen Achievers Club, health and fitness classes and wellness areas, and summer camps for all ages. The programs also include services and initiatives focused on youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.
The Harrisburg Area YMCA was founded in 1854 and was officially established on December 12, 1854 as the eighth YMCA in the United States. It was the first YMCA in the country to provide lodging. The Harrisburg Area YMCA’s swim lesson program celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2006. The organization serves more than 50,000 members and 200,000 individuals a year and serves over 20,000 active members. It grants over $500,000 worth of scholarships to families in the Harrisburg area. Its mission is to provide services to aid in the spiritual, mental and physical development of each person, enabling them to be beneficial and contributing members of society.
The Harrisburg Area YMCA is involved in community efforts such as opening the Camp Curtin YMCA to the Harrisburg Area Food Pantry, giving the pantry a new home. The YMCA Center for Healthy Living, founded in 2016, conducts a Health Equity Tour and a Community Action Tour in partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Health and other community health partners. During these tours and events, staff provide health education on topics such as COVID-19, oral health, tobacco use and vaping, flu, radon, mental health, and chronic disease management, and they promote Pennie, Pennsylvania’s state-based health insurance exchange. Depending on the event and location, offerings may include health screenings such as blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol, A1C, vision, dental, and various cancer and STI screenings, as well as vaccinations, wellness exams, and food distribution. Tour staff also connect attendees with resources including transportation services, housing resources and assistance, drug and alcohol recovery resources, victims’ services, LGBTQ+ resources, veterans’ services, senior care and housing, financial services and education, legal services, and PA 211 information, and they distribute items such as test kits, hygiene kits, clothing, and food.
