The Hazleton Integration Project Youth Programs operate within a community-based effort that seeks to unite people of many different cultures who call Hazleton home. Its mission is to provide educational, cultural, and athletic opportunities for economically underserved children through early childhood development and community outreach, with a focus on teaching diversity and acceptance to current and future generations. The project’s leadership includes Joe Maddon, Hazleton native, philanthropist, and LA Angels Manager, along with Chad Lassister, Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission, and Bob and Elaine Curry. On February 26, 2026, Chad Lassister presented Bob and Elaine Curry with the PHRC Humanitarian Award, the highest honor that PHRC bestows, for their work with the Hazleton Integration Project, and on May 18, HIP honored 26 members of the youth group HIP Corp United with presidential volunteer service awards.
The Hazleton Integration Project is involved in community efforts such as sponsoring the Greater Hazleton Volunteer Service Awards and partnering with the Hazleton Department of Parks and Recreation to create the Hazleton Basketball League, which is open to boys and girls in grades 2–6 and held as a children’s winter league. The organization has hosted events including an Immigration and Workforce Development Roundtable with the Pennsylvania State House Majority Policy Committee and the Legislative Latino Caucus, and AllOne Foundation’s 10th anniversary celebration. Students from Penn State Hazleton and Hazleton Area High School have volunteered at the Soul Kitchen dinner. Parents can stop by the Hazleton One Community Center to sign up their child.
