Hawk Mountain Sanctuary Summer Camps

Hawk Mountain Sanctuary Summer Camps take place at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, which includes a two-acre Native Plant Garden with more than 250 species of native flowers, trees, shrubs, grasses, and vines. The garden area also features a pond with painted turtles, frogs, newts, dragonflies, and damselflies, as well as a bird blind that overlooks a second smaller pond with a meadow behind it. The work area connected to the garden includes composting, storage, potting stations, and a modest greenhouse used to propagate native plants for the garden, for sale, and for select native garden projects in the local community.

Education is described as a vital mission at Hawk Mountain, and its on-site and distance learning programs reflect that focus. Hawk Mountain is identified as a global leader in raptor conservation science that creates, conducts, and coordinates integrated research worldwide. Onsite education programs provide teachers and students with hands-on interaction with raptors, and distance learning programs allow teachers and students who cannot visit in person to bring raptors into the classroom. The Native Plant Garden attracts more than 40 species of butterflies and many birds. Hawk Mountain uses propagated native plants for select native garden projects in the local community. Educator and Raptor Care Specialist Dan Jenkins has been named the 2026 Polytechnic Partner of the Year by the Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School. The Hawk Mountain Native Plant Sale features volunteers, an educational component, and a mix of native trees, shrubs, vines, grasses, ferns, and flowers, with all plants separated by habitat such as sunny/hot or shady/wet, and the sales take place the third Saturday and Sunday in May and the second Saturday in September.
