Saint Francis University traces its history to 1847, when six Franciscan friars came to Loretto, Pennsylvania from Ireland to found what was then known as Saint Francis Academy. The university is the oldest Catholic-Franciscan college in the United States and is founded and animated by the Franciscan Friars of the Third Order Regular Province of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. Its stated mission is that Saint Francis University promotes an inclusive learning community and a lifelong path to virtue, truth, and compassion. The university has been recognized by multiple national rankings and organizations for affordability and impact, and has been named “Top College,” “Bang for the Buck,” and “College of Distinction.” Saint Francis University has also been awarded a $49,771 grant through Pennsylvania’s Manufacturing Innovation Program to support a collaborative research project focused on improving the durability and performance of asphalt roadways. The university will join the Presidents’ Athletic Conference in 2026–2027.
