Mercersburg Summer Programs are accredited by the American Camp Association. Mercersburg Academy was founded in 1893. The leadership team includes Peter Kallin, Director of Summer and External Programs, and Ben Doyka, Assistant Director of Summer and External Programs, Assistant Dormitory Dean, and Mathematics Faculty. All summer staff are required to receive full state and federal clearances as required by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, are certified in CPR/AED, and many also have first aid training. Campus safety personnel patrol the grounds 24 hours a day, and access to dormitories is limited to summer participants. All participants stay in dormitories with air conditioning, carpeted hallways, tiled bathrooms, and private shower areas, and floors are divided by gender. Counselors stay in the dorms with an open-door policy, and the participant-to-staff ratio allows staff to focus on the unique needs and development of every camper. Staff preparation includes safety management and interpersonal skills focused on dealing with homesickness and other camper issues. Rutherford Health and Wellness Center is managed by a team of registered nurses with a full-time health services assistant available 24/7. Communication for parents includes 24-hour access to Mercersburg Summer Programs staff via phone, regular updates on Instagram and Facebook, and access to online photo galleries. Campers are not permitted to have cell phones and are encouraged to write letters home. Mercersburg underwent a rigorous external review to earn American Camp Association accreditation, including areas such as fire protection, food service, transportation, health and wellness, first aid, emergency preparedness, employee screening, adult-to-camper supervision ratios, and aquatic and adventure programming. The Office of Summer and External Programs handles all summer camps, including external groups, as well as facilities rentals during the school year and the summer months, and makes certain facilities available to external groups and organizations on a limited basis in an effort to provide resources to neighbors and the surrounding area. The program operates at Mercersburg Academy, which embraces values described in its mission statement, including hard work, character, community, balancing independence with interdependence, individual humility with collective pride, a commitment to a life of learning, seeking to understand the spiritual nature of human existence, and developing a determination to lead and serve the world.
