About
NJY Camps Round Lake Inclusion Program offers campers a wide range of activities, including horseback riding, swimming in the lake, skateboarding, archery, climbing, visiting an animal center, arts and crafts, and STEM. Campers also have access to speech therapy, occupational therapy, academic enrichment, and community service projects as part of the program.
• Ages: 7–17 years old
NJY Camps states that its mission is to create immersive and inclusive Jewish summer camp experiences that are designed to help young people grow, learn, and transform into the best versions of themselves, while fostering a strong sense of community, Jewish identity, and connection to Israel.
Round Lake is described as a unique inclusion model at NJY Camps designed for children with diverse needs. It is an inclusion program serving children and adolescents with, but not limited to, social communication disorders, ADHD, learning disabilities, and anxiety. Campers who are part of the Round Lake program are fully integrated into the camp experiences at Camp Nah-Jee-Wah and Cedar Lake Camp. Professionals are available to provide speech therapy and occupational therapy according to campers’ Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) at no extra cost, and tutors offer academic enrichment in both individual and group settings. A mental health professional is on site to provide support to campers and staff. Round Lake campers benefit from a high counselor to camper ratio, and staff use visual aids such as schedules and calendars to provide predictability and routine. Round Lake campers ages 15–17 in Teen Village participate in an internship program 4–6 days a week, and Tzevet B’Yachad (TBY) allows Round Lake alumni to return to camp as staff members with needed support.
All lead staff are described as professionals in their fields, including teachers, social workers, nurses, occupational therapists, speech therapists, and Jewish educators. Many counselors are college students majoring in education, psychology, social work, or a related field. Every staff member participates in a specific, week-long training program.
Teen Village campers travel on field trips one or two days per week to participate in community service projects, including trips such as a visit to the AFYA Foundation, an agency committed to sending surplus medical supplies to countries in need.
Parents describe their children’s experiences in several testimonials. One parent states that “Round Lake is where our daughter finally found her people,” and notes that she looks forward to seeing her friends year after year. Another parent describes Round Lake as “an extraordinary place” for their son and notes the friendships he forms with counselors from around the world, as well as his increased confidence and independence when he returns home. A third parent shares that their daughter attends camp for activities such as horseback riding, swimming in the lake, skateboarding, archery, and climbing, and that she has always loved her counselors and everyone who works at the camp. Another testimonial states that “Last summer changed my son’s life,” describing how he reluctantly attended for three weeks but came home wanting to return immediately, and credits Round Lake @ CLC with giving him confidence, friends, and exposure to new opportunities and possibilities.
