About
Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center offers chances to hike a trail, see live animals up close, and learn about conservation. The program includes Community Fishing Days with Fish Identification and Fish Arts and Crafts, as well as Community Nature Journaling and team-building programs.
• Schedule: Hours 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., open daily except during scheduled closures from mid-December to mid-January
Shaver’s Creek was founded in 1976 and has been connecting people to people and people to nature since that time. It is associated with The Pennsylvania State University and serves as a field laboratory where Penn State students can get hands-on experience teaching about the natural world. Its mission is to extend Penn State’s Outreach mission of instruction, service, and research by teaching, modeling, and providing the knowledge, values, skills, experiences, and dedication that enable individuals and communities to achieve and maintain harmony between human activities and the natural systems that support all living species. Shaver’s Creek works directly with State College Area School District and Juniata Valley School District through K–12 school outreach that uses hands-on, inquiry-based lessons focused on science and the environment. The program also includes a Team Development Center that runs team-building programs for corporate groups, student groups, and nonprofit organizations, and it hosts The Creek Journals, where writers, artists, and musicians reflect on eight unique sites surrounding Shaver’s Creek as part of a 100-year Long-Term Ecological Reflections Project.
