Feathers and Flight Camp introduces campers to many different bird species and focuses on why many birds fly and the different ways they take to the skies, as well as why some birds do not fly at all. Campers learn about these topics through examples that include African Penguins.
• Ages: 6–8 years old
• Schedule: Four-day sessions, 9am–3pm
The National Aviary states that its mission is to inspire respect for nature through an appreciation of birds. The National Aviary is America’s only independent indoor nonprofit zoo dedicated to birds and is home to more than 500 birds and other animals representing more than 150 species from around the world, many of them threatened or endangered in the wild. The National Aviary offers large walk-through habitats that allow up-close interaction with free-flying birds, including chances to hand-feed and meet many species that are rarely found in zoos. Dynamic education programming at the National Aviary is led by educators and focuses on birds and their habitats for diverse audiences and instills a conservation ethic. The National Aviary works with the South African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) and the Namibian Foundation for the Conservation of Seabirds (NAMCOB) to help sustain existing wild penguin populations.
