About
Pittsburgh Youth Chorus focuses on choral music and includes solo performances, small group performances, and ensemble singing. Singers take part in performance opportunities with world-class artists and appear on reputable stages in the Pittsburgh region.
• Ages: 6–18 years old
• Schedule: Options on Tuesday evenings for grades 3–8 and Sunday evenings (January–May 2025) for grades 9–12, with additional special events on select dates
Founded in 1983, Pittsburgh Youth Chorus made its debut that same year performing Mahler’s Third Symphony with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Its mission is to empower and inspire tomorrow's leaders through the joy and power of singing, and it states a vision of “Our whole community — vibrant, fully alive, and singing!” The program describes a musically and socially rich environment in which young people ages 6–18 feel a deep sense of belonging, commitment, and connection with others, and it centers its work on integration, inspiration, an appreciation of beauty, and feelings of increased vitality and well-being. Pittsburgh Youth Chorus has been recognized by other arts organizations for the musical excellence and poise of its singers and serves as an exemplar for how singing can impact the world.
Neighborhood training choirs are offered for grades 1–2, and Talisman & Bel Canto Singers for grades 3–8 function as performance choirs that meet on Tuesday evenings. Headwaters & Bridge City Singers for grades 9–12 are described as premier performance opportunities that meet on Sunday evenings from January through May 2025. The event “A Grand Night for Singing” is a choreographed cabaret featuring solo and small group performances in an elegant setting with heavy hors d’oeuvres, cocktails, a tasting station by Nosh & Curd, and a dessert finale by Speckled Hen Chocolate Co., and it also includes a Kendra Scott pop-up station where guests can shop while supporting Pittsburgh Youth Chorus.
Pittsburgh Youth Chorus has collaborated with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Pittsburgh Opera, the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh, and Pittsburgh Public Theater. It has hosted artists of international acclaim such as Kim Nazarian of New York Voices, Joe Negri, the Harlem Spiritual Ensemble, and Elisabeth von Trapp. The chorus has taken young singers to Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Oregon, and the United Kingdom, and notes that Liz Berlin is an alum of the early days of the Children’s Festival Chorus, reflecting a long-standing connection to the region’s musical traditions.
