Since 1857, the YMCA of Reading & Berks County has served families across Reading, Fleetwood, Sinking Spring, and surrounding communities. The organization states its mission as: “To put Judeo-Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.” The childcare centers are fully licensed by the Department of Human Services, and the Pre-K Counts program is offered through Pennsylvania’s FREE Pre-K Counts program, including a STAR 4-rated center at the Reading YMCA with bilingual, licensed staff. The YMCA of Reading & Berks County has been voted Best Summer Camp in Berks and is part of a nationwide network of over 2,700 Ys in more than 10,000 communities. The programs offer flexible child care options throughout the year, including on-site child care for infants through 6th grade at the Reading YMCA with early drop-off and late pick-up options, a School’s Out Program for teacher in-service days, holiday breaks, and other scheduled school closures, and financial assistance options such as subsidized funding for qualifying families and an Open Door Scholarship so no one is denied access based on ability to pay. The YMCA of Reading & Berks County is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

In the Pre-K Counts program at the Reading YMCA, bilingual, licensed staff work in a STAR 4-rated center, and across programs, experienced staff create welcoming spaces where children feel safe, supported, and encouraged to learn every day. One parent, Jackie, shared that her boys “absolutely loved their time at before and after school care at the YMCA,” that they made many friends, enjoyed the after-school healthy eating program, and liked playing in the gym and on the playground, and she described all of the staff members as kind and patient. The YMCA of Reading & Berks County notes that it is proud to walk alongside families like Karen’s, is grateful to United Way of Berks County for capturing that story, runs an Annual Giving Campaign that supports programs across Reading, Fleetwood, Sinking Spring, and beyond, and is a proud partner of other organizations.
