Early Learning Programs use a state-approved curriculum and assessments, offer play-based learning, and provide free breakfast, lunch, and snack. Pennsylvania’s FREE Pre-K Counts program is available at the Reading YMCA for qualifying families in the Greater Reading area, with on-site child care for infants through 6th grade and options for early drop-off and late pick-up. Childcare centers are fully licensed by the Department of Human Services, and Pre-K Counts is led by bilingual, licensed staff in a STAR 4-rated center. The YMCA of Reading & Berks County states its mission as: “To put Judeo-Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.” The organization is described as a leading nonprofit dedicated to building a stronger, healthier community in Berks County, PA, and its Annual Giving Campaign supports programs across Reading, Fleetwood, Sinking Spring, and beyond. It was voted Best Summer Camp in Berks. One parent, Jackie, shared that her boys loved their time in before and after school care at the YMCA, enjoyed the after-school healthy eating program, and liked playing in the gym and on the playground, and she described the staff members as kind and patient.
