A World In Motion (AWIM) PreK-12 STEM Education Program includes hands-on projects such as designing and building a working electric car through the SAE A World In Motion (AWIM) Motorized Toy Car STEM challenge. Students configure gears in any way they want on motorized toy cars, convert the cars to four-wheel drive, and code an Arduino to control a milliwatt hour meter. Students use standardized Motorized Toy Car STEM kits with the same parts for their builds.

The SAE Foundation is celebrating its 40th anniversary, and funds raised by the SAE Foundation support SAE International’s A World In Motion (AWIM) PreK-12 STEM education program, Collegiate Design Series (CDS), awards, and STEM scholarships. A World In Motion (AWIM) is described as an award-winning PreK-12 STEM education program, and SAE is described as the only organization with a comprehensive continuum of Pre-K through College STEM education programs. SAE’s STEM curriculum enables students to connect classroom learning with real-life application and develop 21st century skills needed to succeed in real-world work environments, and SAE’s STEM programs have reached more than 7 million students worldwide and engaged more than 30,000 STEM industry professionals as volunteers.
The Electric Vehicle Learning Center (EV-LC), a non-profit in San Marcos, California, partnered with the SAE Foundation with funding support from Qualcomm to run the SAE A World In Motion (AWIM) Motorized Toy Car STEM challenge. According to EV-LC instructor Ron Grosinger (“Mr. G.”), students “got super creative and figured it out on their own” when they came back and their car was already four-wheel drive, and he describes teaching class remotely as “about community” where students work through shared failures using the same standardized STEM kits. He also states that these experiences are “about lighting a fire” and “like being an artist using physics.” EV-LC executive director Margarita Santos states, “Igniting the connection between EV technology and creativity to engage and inspire young minds is our mission.” The leadership team connected to the SAE Foundation and STEM learning includes Jamie Ferguson, Executive Director, SAE Foundation & STEM Learning; Joy Lancaster, Development Officer; Tricia Norris, Development Officer; Myles Harper, Development Officer; and Tim Leonard, Project Specialist for Advancement.
