About
Upward Sports is a sports ministry program that includes basketball, soccer, cheerleading, volleyball, flag football, baseball, softball, and Upward Pickleball. The program partners with churches to use these sports as part of their ministry in local communities. Experiences are structured to engage the whole athlete in mind, body, spirit, and soul through these sports activities.
Upward Sports was founded in 1995 out of a church in Spartanburg, South Carolina by Caz McCaslin. Its stated mission is promoting the discovery of Jesus through sports and using the power of sports to share the gospel in communities. The organization partners with churches to leverage sports in their community, co-creating different play experiences to welcome and reach children, and supporting churches with strategic consulting, logistics, materials, and spiritual support. Today, there are over 2,000 Upward sports experiences across the U.S. serving hundreds of thousands of young athletes. Upward Sports is a 501(c)(3) non-profit ministry that complies with Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability (ECFA) membership standards, and Forvis Mazars conducts audits to provide transparency and accountability for its financial practices and internal controls. Testimonials from church partners describe Upward Sports as unifying, as a ministry opportunity to connect with their communities, and as a program that offers resources and support for organizing leagues.
