About

The Boys & Girls Club of the Northern Plains – STEM Program includes activities such as a one-on-one mentoring program, a Reading Club, STEM activities, homework assistance, and playing mat ball. The program is part of a broader set of impactful youth programs where caring and qualified staff work to offer youth a safe place to learn and grow, ongoing relationships with caring adults, life-enhancing programs and character development experiences, and hope and opportunity.

• Ages: 6–18 years old

The mission of Boys & Girls Club of the Northern Plains is to inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need them most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, and responsible citizens. Boys & Girls Club of the Northern Plains, Inc. is an umbrella organization with multiple Boys & Girls Clubs serving youth in Brookings, Elkton, Moody County, Yankton, and Vermillion, and it also operates licensed Early Childhood Centers. It is an equal opportunity employer and provider. Through community-based Club sites and licensed Early Childhood Centers, the organization offers safe, fun, and inclusive spaces with programs that support academic success, healthy habits, strong character, and future readiness, serving hundreds of youth each day.

One mentor, Kayla, explains that the program meets with kids who really need them most, including many who need a mentor because they may not have an adult figure in their life to talk to or who need extra one-on-one attention from an adult. Mentor Kayla Wede describes one youth who, before mentoring, struggled at the Club, often becoming angry and defiant toward staff, feeling that rules did not apply to him, and making noises instead of communicating. She reports that in his second year of the program, he has learned how to communicate without getting angry, looks staff in the eye, has made friends and become a better friend for others, understands why there are rules, and has made improvements in following them.
