YMCA Y-CAP Chattanooga, 1600 Central Avenue, Chattanooga, TN 37408
About
Y-CAP (YMCA Community Action Project) offers activities such as swimming, boxing, woodworking, pottery, volunteering, and field trips. The program also includes Swim Ready sessions for participants.
• Ages: 10–14 years old
• Schedule: Monday–Thursday, 10 am–7 pm
Y-CAP is an early intervention and prevention program for kids ages 10–14 who need after school care and mentorship because of low grades, behavior management problems, anger management problems, or acting out at home, and it is based on Christian beliefs. Each student and their family receives a personalized plan designed to address their educational, behavioral, and spiritual needs. Students attend after school and during school breaks, including summer programming and special field trips, and all activities are designed to improve their behavior and outlook on life. Y-CAP has touched the lives of more than 3,200 children and their families since 1998, and the positive effects touch the whole family. Reported outcomes include 100% of Y-CAP students having better attendance in school, 98% having no more juvenile court offenses, and 93% improving their grades by one letter or more.
Y-CAP hosts two different site locations called Y-CAP Chattanooga and Y-CAP Cleveland, and teen programs, a community garden, community health, boxing, a woodshop, and swim lessons are listed as branch amenities. The leadership team includes Marcus Kyle, Program Director, and Cason Ingram, Program Director. Children are referred to Y-CAP either through the juvenile court system or the school system. Thanks to the IRONMAN Foundation, Y-CAP participants take part in special Swim Ready sessions that focus on water safety.
Testimonials about the program include: “Y-CAP has made a huge impact on my students and my own family over the years,” from Hamilton County teacher Cindy Kean; “I know where these children are going to end up if we don't get them straightened out now. Y-CAP is a game changer,” from Hamilton County Juvenile Court Judge Rob Philyaw; and “Y-CAP has helped me improve my grades and gain more confidence in myself,” from Y-CAP participant Ja'toni Evans.
