Nashville Children’s Theatre is 90+ years old and has been bringing professional theatre to young audiences for nearly a century. Its mission states that Nashville Children's Theatre creates artistic experiences for everyone and that theatre can change the world, one person at a time. The mission also states that its performances and classes help kids process real-world situations and build a foundation of empathy for their relationships and actions, now and in the future, and that it nurtures the next generation of global citizens by providing transformational theatrical experiences which reflect an evolving community, instill profound empathy, and foster personal discovery.
Nashville Children’s Theatre is the country's oldest youth-centered professional theatre and is the oldest children’s theatre in the country. It is nationally recognized as a premier culture, entertainment, and education destination for hearts and minds of all ages and is the second-highest attended cultural institution in Nashville, according to the Nashville Business Journal. TIME Magazine named it one of the “Top Five Theatres for Young Audiences in the US.” The theatre offers family-friendly programming, accessibility offerings including sensory-friendly and enhanced shows and ADA accommodations, kid-friendly seating in a state-of-the-art theatre custom-built for families, curriculum guides and lesson plans for field trips, pay-what-you-can tickets for a select number of seats for each show available the day of the performance, and free parking in a dedicated lot. One third of youth participants receive scholarships or financial aid.
Nashville Children’s Theatre partners with organizations across Middle Tennessee to bring transformative theatre to kids in their schools and communities. One teacher who brought a class to see “Peter Pan: Wendy's Adventure to Neverland” described the play as “a magical experience for both my students and even for an older kid who forgot to believe.” A Nashville Parent writer noted that, as a parent, a favorite part of going to shows there is looking around and seeing “every kid's unblinking face, utterly fixated on what's happening in front of them.” A BroadwayWorld.com reviewer wrote that throughout its long history, Nashville Children’s Theatre has broken barriers and set the standard for excellence in theater for younger audiences. An audience member for “Wheels on the Bus” said the entire program is “so fun and inclusive for kids of all ages and abilities” and appreciated how all children are included on stage “in a loving and respectful way.” Another “Wheels on the Bus” audience member shared that having a space where an 11-month-old could experience and enjoy the theater in her own way “was such a joy” and that they “can’t wait for the next Snuggery show.”
