Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is a book gifting program that mails free, high-quality books directly to children’s homes. The program mails a specially selected book each month and also offers audio and Braille books, which were added in 2011.
• Ages: Birth–5 years old
Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library was launched in 1995. Its stated mission is to inspire a love of reading by gifting books free of charge to children from birth to age five, through funding shared by Dolly Parton and local community partners in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia and Republic of Ireland. The program operates in these five countries and, in 2016, began sending one million books a month. In 2022, it mailed 2 million books each month globally, and in 2023 it gifted its 200 millionth book since inception. In 2024, 1 in 7 children (14 percent) under the age of 5 in the U.S. receives a book in the mail each month from the program. Funding is shared by Dolly Parton and local community partners in each participating country.
Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library has received The Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval, a Best Practices award from the Library of Congress Literacy Awards, and recognition in the journal Reading Psychology.
