The Clinic for Autism Research, Evaluation, and Support (CARES) offers diagnostic assessment and evaluation, clinic-based and home-based educational programs founded in applied behavior analysis (ABA), social skills groups, job-coaching, functional behavior assessments, behavior intervention planning, consultations, and leisure skills training through a summer camp. Services include leisure skills training through a very popular summer camp that is connected to the other clinic activities.
CARES is part of the special education and school psychology graduate programs at Texas State University. School Psychology faculty and students conduct the diagnostics, Special Education faculty and students provide the educational services, and Exercise Sports Science faculty with psychology and other students supervise activity in the summer camp. The Clinic for Autism Research, Evaluation, and Support (CARES) was established by the College of Education to provide multiple services for individuals with autism and their families, while training school and agency personnel to apply research-based practices. Related to the service and training components of CARES are research projects related to diagnostics, special education strategies, applied behavior analysis applications, and motor learning. Through quality services, personnel training and research, CARES staff strives to inform the field and enhance the quality of life for individuals with autism and their families. The mission of the special education program is to prepare educators and specialists who apply current, evidence-based practices in special education for the purpose of preparing individuals with disabilities to live independent, responsible and personally satisfying lives in a diverse, global society.
