John Knox Ranch Summer Camp is part of a nonprofit summer camp and retreat center that is the camp and retreat ministry program of Mission Presbytery, part of the Presbyterian Church USA. The program includes a resident camp for students entering grades 2–12 and a day camp for kids ages 4–8. John Knox Ranch began on July 10, 1962 with the purchase of the 254-acre Meyer Ranch, and the first John Knox Ranch Summer Camp was held in the summer of 1963. In 1968, the Presbytery of John Knox (now Mission Presbytery) bought another 46 acres, bringing the property to its current 300 acres, with 255 acres under a Hill Country Conservancy-held conservation easement. John Knox Ranch states its mission as: “At John Knox Ranch, we foster experiences of Christian community in the beauty of God's creation,” and describes itself as a place where love, acceptance, grace, and fun flow freely. John Knox Ranch is accredited by the American Camp Association and has an Emergency Action Plan and flood monitoring and safety plan to meet new camper safety law requirements. Families can rent a single cabin, the whole ranch, or a campsite under the stars.
The leadership team includes Henry Owen (Executive Director), Lori Bruns (Office Manager), Andy Watson (Program Director), Amy Lyles (School Program Coordinator), Brynn Owen (Program Specialist), Garrett Vanden Bout (Program Specialist), Matthew Wood (Program Manager), and Lita Semu (Head Cook). John Knox Ranch partners with Hill Country Conservancy on the conservation easement and collaborates with Austin College ACtivators and the Mission Presbytery Connect Committee on the Small Church Retreat.
Parent feedback includes comments from camper parents and grandparents who describe confidence in how John Knox Ranch handles a child’s physical and emotional safety, appreciation for children being able to run, explore, play, ask questions, and discover their own spirituality, and reports of campers returning enthusiastic about their time at camp, the friends they made, and the food they ate. Multiple parents mention their children enjoying swimming, the food, and their counselors, and one parent notes that staff “goes above and beyond to make the camp experience the best it can possibly be” and expresses gratitude for the care given to their children.
