Prude Ranch Summer Camp
Historic Prude Guest Ranch, 201 Prude Guest Ranch Rd, Fort Davis, TX 79734
About
Prude Ranch Summer Camp takes place at Historic Prude Guest Ranch and includes organized horseback riding sessions, trail rides through scenic mountain ranges, hiking on ranch trails, and swimming in a pool with circulating heated water. The program also incorporates experiential learning, outdoor education, and excursions, and it operates alongside activities such as sports fitness and medicine camps, cycle-fests, RV camping and RV rallies, birdwatching and birding, square dancing, and cattle drives.
Prude Ranch was established as a cattle ranch over 125 years ago and later operated as both a guest ranch and working cattle ranch, with the first Prude Ranch Summer Camp session held in 1951 for a group of 18 boys and expanded to include girls starting in 1955. John G. “Big Spurs” Prude hosted thousands of visitors who joined cattle drives, ate from chuck wagons, listened to cowboy songs around a campfire, and he rode with boys and girls every summer. By the late 1970s, Prude Ranch Summer Camp families were located across Texas, Mexico, and north of the Mason-Dixon Line, and in the late 1990s the ranch was recognized by the Texas Historical Commission as an important historic site to protect and preserve. The leadership team includes Bill Caruth, Bruce Davis, and three generations of the Prude family, with Bruce Davis joining as General Manager in 1998 to oversee day-to-day operations, and with John Robert serving as head counselor and Betty as camp administrator and chief cook for the first camp session in 1951. Historic Prude Guest Ranch states that it combines aspects of the modern world with old west wilderness to create a western vacation for children or the entire family. Prude Ranch hosts groups such as public and private schools for an outdoor education program, birdwatching groups, cyclists, corporate retreats, weddings, square dancers, fellowship groups, and the Texas Star Party, and it has a history of school groups attending that dates back to funding support connected to the Hillcrest Foundation in the mid-1980s.
