Camp Fire Camp El Tesoro is a 223-acre multi-use camp established in 1934 and accredited by the American Camp Association. Camp Fire First Texas, which operates the camp, has been an inclusive, innovative leader in youth development since 1914 and offers programs that include camping, licensed afterschool enrichment, teen services, environmental education, school readiness, and professional development for early educators. The camp features two swimming pools, a covered equestrian center, and a challenge course with both high and low elements, and underwent a Capital Campaign in 2010 to renovate and upgrade Camp El Tesoro facilities. Camp Fire describes its experiences as using a research-based and measurable framework for thriving, with programs that connect young people to the outdoors, to others, and to themselves, and that enable people to develop essential skills with long-term benefits and positive social impact. Camp Fire states that children and youth in its programs find a safe, fun and inclusive place where they form lasting relationships, develop a sense of belonging and make positive contributions to their families and community, and that it provides youth and educators with a space where they feel like they truly belong. Camp Fire Camp El Tesoro partners with Texas Parks and Wildlife to expand outdoor learning at the camp.

One camp alum and former counselor, now a college senior, reports learning to never give up, to keep trying, and to return to the growth mindset learned from Camp Fire and from elders. A camp parent reports that a child who had many difficulties in 3rd grade and was not excited about a new camp changed their mind after the first day and received a Leadership Award, and that this experience was very meaningful. Another statement from the same parent says, “I saw some spark come back to my son, and I am a grateful mama.”
