Dad’s Club Aquatics was founded in 1948, and a pool on the site officially opened on June 12, 1953. The organization has been in operation ever since 1953 and is celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2023. It is nationally recognized for its highly successful Dad’s Club Swim Team and is a member of USA Swimming. Dad’s Club Aquatics is described as Houston’s most historic swimming and aquatics facility and as a membership-based, non-profit organization with over 500 swimmers a day at its facility. The mission statement says that through the sport of swimming and a family-friendly atmosphere, the program celebrates individual accomplishment and promotes personal responsibility to teach life lessons that benefit the individual and community beyond the pool’s edge.
The heart of the facility is formed by a 50-meter long-course pool, a 33-yard pool, and a 25-yard family pool, and programs are offered year-round from a permanent location. The first pool on the site was 33-1/3 yards in length and included a one-meter and a three-meter diving board, and before the summer of 1956 a bulkhead was installed to make the distance 25 yards for AAU-sanctioned swimming competition with five lanes. Over the years, additional pools and features were added, including an indoor 25-yard pool with wide lanes, cutting-edge lane ropes, and large sliding doors for ventilation, and later a new 25-yard outdoor community pool with an L-shaped design and a zero-depth entry set away from seven swim lanes that serves as a neighborhood pool in the summer and a training and competition pool during the rest of the year. In 2014, construction was completed on this new 25-yard outdoor community pool, and in 2019 a capital campaign funded resurfacing of the 50-meter outdoor pool and updated pool equipment.
Dad’s Club Aquatics is described as nationally recognized and community driven, with support from long-time patrons, swim team parents, and area residents and neighbors. The Lions Club donated funds for a kitchen project in 1952, and the Bill Williams Capon Dinner Group made a donation that enabled the indoor 25-yard pool. A capital campaign and donations from local foundations, fundraising events with contributions from members, swim parents, and local businesses, as well as personal donations by board members, funded later renovations. The City of Spring Valley passed a resolution to help Dad’s Club remain at its long-time home, and Dad’s Club invites donations and corporate sponsorship.
Linda Kutac serves as Executive Director and is licensed as a Registered Nurse with advanced nursing certifications in mental health and substance abuse. Programs at Dad’s Club Aquatics include options for swimmers with special needs, adult swimmers 18 and over in Adult Training coached workouts, and Safety Academy for swimmers 15 and up.
