Houston Arboretum & Nature Center Children’s Programs include activities such as Guided Nature Hikes, Guided Nature Hikes en español, Family Owl Prowl, Tyke Hikes, Discover Nature Together Scavenger Hunts, and the Second Saturday Bird Survey. Additional events connected with the program include an Educator Workshop, Tapas on the Trails, Arbor Day and Earth Day celebrations, plant sales, the Alfresco Gala, ArBOOretum, and the Arbor Cup Golf Tournament. The Nature Center building that supports these programs includes a Nature Shop and an interactive Discovery Room with educational exhibits, hands-on activities, live ambassador animals, biofacts, and a weekly botany display.
• Schedule: Grounds & Trails are open daily from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm, and the Nature Center is open daily from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm; specific programs are scheduled on set dates and times, including recurring Second Saturday Bird Surveys.
• Price: Admission is free, and parking is $6.50, with free parking on Thursdays for all guests and year-round for Arboretum Members.
Established in 1967, the organization’s name changed to Houston Arboretum & Nature Center in 1992. The mission of the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center is to provide education about the natural environment to people of all ages and to protect and enhance the Arboretum as a haven and as a sanctuary for native plants and animals. It is one of the first nature education facilities for children in the state of Texas and provides nature education for more than 10,000 children annually while reaching over 600,000 visitors each year. The Houston Arboretum & Nature Center operates City of Houston land under an agreement with the City of Houston Parks and Recreation Department and has been awarded Level 1 Accreditation by The ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program and The Morton Arboretum.
