About
Moonlight Musicals Academy offers semester classes, summer camps, youth shows, and youth main stage shows that include auditions, rehearsals, and final performance revues. Academy students take 9-week semester classes that focus on voice, acting, and dance, and summer campers spend an entire week preparing youth shows such as Shrek the Musical Kids and Seussical Kids. Academy youth shows are a standard part of the main season and are free to participate in.
• Schedule: Spring semester registration opens January 1, with classes starting on either March 9 or 10 and running for 9 weeks; registration for 2026 summer camps opens March 1, with six different weeks of camps across June and July, each lasting an entire week.
• Price: $250 per semester for 9 weeks of instruction, an Academy T-shirt, and a final performance revue that is free for family and friends; $150 per camper for a full week of camp including all rehearsals, a T-shirt, and a final free performance for family and friends.
Moonlight Musicals Academy is led by Executive Director Tom Laney, Founder and Artistic Director Gerald Dolter, Assistant Artistic Director Amy Laney, President Dimitri Pappas, Vice President Cassie Christopher, Treasurer Betsy Bass, Secretary Stacy Keith, Artistic Liaison Mitchell Britton, and Accountant Deena O'Guinn. Academy students learn musical theatre from three highly trained instructors in voice, acting, and dance, and campers work with highly trained stage directors, music directors, choreographers, and camp counselors. The Academy is the largest program of its kind in West Texas and serves around 500 young performers throughout the year, with performers learning to play for sold-out crowds of hundreds of audience members per night. Academy classes culminate in a final revue in May, and summer camps alternate between producing Shrek the Musical Kids and Seussical Kids across six weeks in June and July. The mission of Moonlight Musicals is to create family-friendly entertainment, provide musical theatre education, and develop professional opportunities for the South Plains through the tradition of summer shows. The Moonlight Musicals Academy offers education, training, and opportunities to the youth of Lubbock and the South Plains, and its vision is to continue serving families as a cultural touchstone so future generations can experience live outdoor musical theatre. At performances, outside food and drink are permitted, concessions and food trucks are available on site, and families are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and picnic blankets.
