Fifty years ago in 1967, a group of Midland parents established what is now known as COM Aquatics, Inc., and the Mabee Memorial Aquatic Center officially opened in June 1972. COM expanded in 1993 with the addition of the Abell-Hanger Pool and the O’Shaughnessy Diving Center, and in 2000 added Pevehouse Pool and de-Compiegne-Wallace Pool. In 2007, COM established a comprehensive physical therapy practice, and the FMH Foundation Natatorium opened in April 2016. The COM Physical Therapy Center employs four Physical Therapists and two Physical Therapy Assistants with over 80 years of combined therapy experience. COM is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation and does not receive operating income from the City or other government entities, the United Way or charitable foundations generally. COM has hosted numerous local, state, and national events that have had economic impact on the Midland community. The organization reports over 700 athletes enrolled in children’s programs, over 1,500 adult members participating in various fitness programs, and projects that in 2018 its physical therapy department will provide over 10,000 physical therapy visits. COM states that it is open to all members of the community and offers comprehensive fitness programs for almost everyone.
