The Midland YMCA began in 1953 with 1,162 charter members. A temporary board with George H.W. Bush as chairman raised funds to start the organization, and in September 1953 the first elected board was installed with Curt Inman serving as chairman. The YMCA of Midland operates a fully staffed Children's Learning Center for children 6 weeks old to school age and offers major program services that include after school child care, summer day camps, teen programs, aquatic programs, youth sports, adult sports, parent-child programs, and adult and senior health and fitness programs. The Midland YMCA states its mission as putting Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind, and body for all. The organization reminds kids and adults about the importance of practicing safety in and around the water. YMCA programs teach youth and families values such as honesty, responsibility, and respect, and through a variety of activities, youth develop skills while they gain confidence and self-esteem. The YMCA describes its experience as building strong kids, strong families, and strong communities.
