About

Monahans Kids Zone (MKZ) is a nonprofit afterschool and summer program where children take part in tutoring, mentoring, homework help, arts, sports, and games. The program also offers the EDSOMA reading program and Code Ninjas computer coding classes. Its programs focus on the whole child by including academic support, technology access, creativity, healthy snacks and meals, and community connection.

• Ages: 6–18 years old

Monahans Kids Zone, a program of Ward County Greater Works, has served kids in 1st–6th grade since 2007 and is expanding to serve students through 12th grade. Its mission is “Investing in the youth of today for a better tomorrow.” The program offers afterschool programming, nutritious food, mentoring, and supervised activities in a setting described as a safe, welcoming place where kids can grow academically, socially, and emotionally. MKZ partners with the West Texas Food Bank to provide daily meals and snacks, which for many participants may be their only food outside of school. It also partners with parents, schools, and local organizations, and the new facility will host events for the community and open space for other community programs. The Lobo Learning Center includes tutoring, homework support, and a computer lab that aims to close the technology gap and expand access to learning tools.
