About

Camp Akiva is a Christian youth camp program that operates at a facility formerly known as Christian Camp of the Living Word, a camp started by a group of churches in the spring of 1973. The program serves children and teens who have experienced abuse and neglect, in a camp setting, weekend retreats, and mentoring clubs that use age-appropriate curriculum, and it also hosts groups from churches and other organizations that align with its stated faith principles.

• Ages: 6–18 years old

Camp Akiva is a 501(c)3 non-profit Christian youth camp that exists to serve the needs of its ministry owner, Our Father’s Children, which creates positive uplifting memories for children of abuse and neglect ranging in ages 6–18 in its programs. The camp also partners with churches and organizations to provide Christ-centered hospitality and may permit bookings from non-religious, tax-exempt charitable, educational, or civic groups engaged in nonprofit activities that promote the flourishing and common good of society in a manner consistent with Biblical principles and Camp Akiva’s Statement of Faith, while reserving the right to refuse groups whose purposes, beliefs, or teachings are not consistent with that Statement of Faith. The facility was originally started as Christian Camp of the Living Word in the spring of 1973, was purchased by Our Father’s Children in the fall of 2012 and renamed Camp Akiva, and was first fully operational under the Camp Akiva name in the summer of 2015. The name Akiva (pronounced Uh-kee-vah) means “protect or shelter,” and the camp describes itself as a place of shelter and a sense of home for many children of abuse and neglect, as well as a place where every person leaves revived, refreshed, and reminded of God’s greater love that offers hope to everyone. Camp Akiva is licensed and regulated by the Texas Department of State Health Services and continues to allow the group of churches that previously owned the facility, Christian Camp of the Living Word, to use it. The camp’s stated vision is to offer every child in Texas who has endured abuse and neglect the hope of Jesus Christ in a safe and loving environment, and its mission is to be a refuge offering hope to children of abuse and neglect and to provide Christ-centered hospitality to all age groups in a setting separate from the pressures of the world.
