JK Tae Kwon Do Academy has been in San Antonio for more than 16 years and is built on over 40 years of traditional martial arts experience. Grandmaster Kim, now retired, is a 9th Dan who began his Taekwondo journey in Seoul, South Korea in the early 1970s and opened his first dojang in the 1980s. His son, Master Jun Kim, started training in Taekwondo at the age of 3 and opened JK Tae Kwon Do Academy in 2010, leading the San Antonio location. The academy states that it is committed to providing martial arts and Taekwondo instruction in an atmosphere of positive energy and respect for kids, teens, and adults, where students build confidence, develop strong character, and grow into leaders. According to the academy, students gain discipline, focus, and a mindset to achieve their goals in and out of the studio, improve fitness, learn self-defense, and become part of a supportive, family-like environment while learning respect, perseverance, and confidence.
The academy describes itself as deeply involved in the community and offering opportunities that challenge, inspire, and bring out the best in every student. Its students compete at the national level every year across the United States and perform every year for the San Antonio Spurs halftime show at the Frost Bank Center. The academy characterizes training there as a life-changing experience that equips students with skills and values that last a lifetime.
