About
YMCA of Greater San Antonio Youth Programs – Walzem Family YMCA offers summer day camp, swimming, fitness activities, Youth Sports, Swim Lessons, and Mental Health Support. The program takes place at the Walzem Family YMCA and is part of a larger network that includes state-of-the-art fitness facilities, sports complexes, early learning centers, and school-age after-school programs across the greater San Antonio area.
• Schedule: Walzem Family YMCA branch hours are Monday through Thursday from 7am to 1pm and 4pm to 7pm, and Friday from 7am to 1pm.
The YMCA of Greater San Antonio states its mission as putting Judeo-Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all. The organization notes a history from 1876 to 2026 of listening and responding to critical social needs in the community. It has been selected as an Impact San Antonio 2023 Grant Award Finalist in the Health and Wellness category. Community involvement includes collaborations with residents, an immersive children’s environment developed with The DoSeum, a $610,000 donation from City Wide Facility Solutions to support YMCA programs, a $5,000 Texas Bar Foundation Grant for the Youth & Government Program, and a partnership between Texas YMCA and the Bezos Family Foundation to increase student access to youth civic engagement opportunities. The YMCA of Greater San Antonio also highlights an ultra-accessible fitness center for all through the Morgan’s and YMCA project.
Parent and member feedback includes comments that staff at the YMCA are friendly and helpful, that youth sports coaches engage with kids and support skill improvement and friendships, and that aquatics programming has supported one child’s progress from barely swimming to joining a competitive swim team. Other testimonials describe kids enjoying Kids Club and arts and crafts, group classes being motivating and fun, and facilities such as an enormous and well-kept pool, up-to-date and well-maintained equipment, a tidy locker room, and an impressive splash pad.
