All faculty and housing directors are Texas certified educators and/or university professors, and faculty are selected based on outstanding professional performance and their personal commitment to the Texas Lutheran University Summer Music Academy philosophy. Student leaders are college students hand-selected to assist with Summer Music Academy, and all activities are supervised by professional camp personnel. The leadership team includes Dr. Brett A. Richardson, Director of Bands. Middle school bands, choirs, and orchestras are for students with at least one year of formal school instruction who are entering grades 6–8, and senior high school bands, choirs, and orchestras are for students with at least two years of formal school instruction who are entering grades 9–12. Senior high students may choose a General track, selecting a combination of courses from any offerings in any area, and participants are asked to select one track in orchestra or band.
Electives are offered in a variety of specific areas, and not all electives may be available, depending on demand and faculty availability, with requests filled in the order they are received. High school band students should note that Jazz Band and Reedmaking (for double reed players) each take two elective spots. All students attending the Summer Music Academy must audition on Sunday for placement in bands, and all students may be asked to sight-read a short selection. Percussionists must bring their own sticks, mallets, and an optional drum pad, and other equipment will be provided.
Students are housed in separate residence halls based on age and gender, with two students per room. The camp is contained within the borders and safety of the Texas Lutheran University campus, and all performances are open to the public, with professionally made recordings available for purchase at the time of registration and performances. A limited number of scholarships are available based on individual student achievement through the TMEA/ATSSB region, area, and all-state process, and the Patricia and Roy Norton Memorial SMA Scholarship may benefit one high school clarinet player and one high school oboe player each year. Updated residential and commuter information packets are scheduled to be uploaded by June 1, 2026. Online registration will not be processed without the $100 deposit, and the remaining balance can be paid using the Online Payment Form and must be paid by June 15.
The mission statement of Summer Music Academy states that a student's performance depends on challenging instruction, highly qualified and supportive faculty, a camp culture that builds community, accessible facilities, and opportunities to grow in every dimension, and that students at the Summer Music Academy will find the conjunction of these factors and more. Texas Lutheran University is described as a small, private university focused on the liberal arts and professional programs. Seguin is located 35 miles northeast of downtown San Antonio and 50 miles south of Austin and is accessible from any direction via major highways.
