About
Museum of the Coastal Bend Camps & Classes includes activities such as Family Discovery Saturday, Cowboy Life–Celebrate National Day of the Cowboy!, and other fun, family-friendly activities. Participants can view a series of paintings that chronicle the grueling, dusty reality of a historical cattle drive from Texas to California, pre-Civil War, and explore the enduring legacy of Coastal Bend ranching families through the temporary exhibit The Texas-California Trail Drives 1849-1860 by Tom Jones. The program also offers chances to unearth the past at the Public Archaeology Lab and to learn about the many people and cultures of the Coastal Bend, including archaeology, Indigenous People, French Contact, Spanish Influence, the Columbian Exchange, ranching, and Fort St. Louis, the French attempt to colonize Texas.
• Schedule: Open Tuesday–Saturday with daytime hours, with the Public Archaeology Lab and Family Discovery Saturday offered at set times during the week
• Price: Admission is pay-what-you-want.
The Museum of the Coastal Bend features the Borchers Leon Exhibit Hall, where visitors can visit “Where Texas Ranching Began” and find 13,000 years of heritage in a permanent exhibit that displays the last 13,000 years of Texas history, from the first inhabitants of the Coastal Bend region through French, Spanish, and Mexican colonial efforts up to diverse modern Texan influences. Additional offerings include the virtual exhibit “Where Texas History Began,” The Cowboy Way: An Evening with Bob McCan, and an exhibit reception for The Texas-California Trail Drives 1849-1860 by Tom Jones.
The Museum of the Coastal Bend’s mission is to showcase the rich multi-cultural heritage of the mid-coastal region of Texas, with a stated purpose to collect, preserve, exhibit, interpret, and educate using the history and heritage of the region. Victoria College, which developed the museum with board advisors and volunteers from Victoria and nearby communities, has served the Coastal Bend community since 1925, and the Museum of the Coastal Bend opened with a Chamber of Commerce Red Ribbon ceremony on October 11, 2003. The leadership team includes Sue Prudhomme, Director; Glenn Dives, Exhibits & Collections Manager; Claudia Moseley, Education Coordinator; and Ben Hernandez, Operations Manager.
