Valley Nature Center, 301 South Border Ave, Weslaco, TX 78596
About
Valley Nature Center Educational Programs include school field trips, live animal presentations, South Texas Natural History classes, and summer nature camps for children. Participants can stroll the 1 mile of trails in the nature park, wander around the trails to see butterflies, birds, reptiles, rabbits, lizards, and amphibian species, and use interactive displays to learn about plants and animals of the Rio Grande Valley. Activities also include examining plant species native to the Sabal Palm Grove, Arroyo Colorado Brush, Barretal, Coastal Lomas, and Chihuahuan Thorn Forest.
• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: Open Tuesday–Friday 9am–4pm, Saturday 9am–5pm, and Sunday 12pm–5pm; closed Mondays and all major holidays
• Price: Children (12 and under): $3.00; Adults (13 and over): $6.00; Seniors (55 and over): $4.00; VNC Members: Free.
The programs take place in a six-acre park that includes cactus gardens, butterfly gardens, bird feeding stations, a 1/4 acre wetland boardwalk, small ponds, walking trails, a wide diversity of native plants, a native plant nursery, interpretive signage, and native wildlife, supported by a state-of-the-art green facility completed in October 2014. The six-acre park is described as an urban paradise and a secret garden in the heart of the Rio Grande Valley, and it is home to a wide variety of the Lower Rio Grande Valley’s native plants and animals, with an ongoing effort to enhance plant diversity and protect local plant species while providing diverse food and habitat for resident and migratory wildlife. The Valley Nature Center is the oldest nature center in the Rio Grande Valley and the only non-profit center fully dedicated to environmental education south of San Antonio and east of Eagle Pass, and the Lower Rio Grande Valley is described as one of the top birding and butterfly destinations in the United States.
Over the past 35 years, many plants were transplanted into this protected area from sites that were slated for development. The mission of Valley Nature Center is to provide educational opportunities and to foster appreciation and understanding of the Lower Rio Grande Valley's unique natural communities of flora and fauna. Valley Nature Center is a non-profit 501(c)(3) that relies on funding from its own programs, membership, donations, grants, sponsorships, and similar sources, with sponsors that include local law offices, banks, service clubs, businesses, and the City of Weslaco. One visitor stated, “I couldn't believe the wonderful sites and sounds I found at the Valley Nature Center. It was like stepping into nature in the middle of the city, so convenient to get to... I will be back a lot more...”
