The American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) was established in the Los Angeles area in 1964 with nine teams. AYSO Region 286 serves Roy and Western Weber County. AYSO’s stated mission is “Providing world class youth soccer programs that enrich children's lives.” AYSO’s grassroots program starts with a community-based league called a Region, supervised by a Regional Commissioner and a local board of directors, and AYSO is supported by more than 250,000 volunteers.
AYSO Region 286 follows AYSO’s “Everyone Plays” philosophy, which states that every player on every team must play at least half of every game. Teams are formed using a “Balanced Teams” approach, with new teams created each year to be as evenly balanced as possible. Registration is open to all children between 4 and 19 years of age who want to register and play soccer. The program emphasizes Positive Coaching, Good Sportsmanship, and a Player Development focus, and it uses the Kids Zone program to encourage positive language, sportsmanship, and a specific type of experience on the sidelines. The VIP program is available for kids with special needs. Coach Certification and Safe Haven programs are used to strengthen child protection.
AYSO is a nationwide non-profit organization that develops and delivers youth soccer programs in a fun, family environment and maintains relations with organizations such as the National Council of Youth Sports, Girls Scouts USA, the National Association for Sports and Physical Education, People to People, Optimists International, Police Athletic Leagues, the National Alliance for Youth Sports, Boys and Girls Clubs of America, YMCA, the United States Soccer Federation, and the Character Counts program. AYSO is a National Association of the United States Soccer Federation. AYSO and Chicago Public Schools have a partnership to enhance youth sports programming. American Youth Soccer Organization and Northland Sports Alliance announced a partnership expanding soccer programming in Kansas City. American Youth Soccer Organization and US Center for Mental Health & Sport announced a partnership focused on player and volunteer wellness.
Michael Karon is the President of AYSO. Michael Karon was recognized by Stack Sports with the Stack Leadership Award for his impact in the world of sports volunteering.
