About

Head Start Preschool includes classroom activities such as cleaning, reading, and playtime. The program is part of Head Start classrooms that offer free quality education to children from birth to 5 years old. Children in the program also receive healthy, fresh meals and nutritious snacks prepared for Head Start classrooms every day, and volunteers help sort and pack fresh produce and snacks for children in poverty in the community.

Utah Community Action, which operates Head Start Preschool, was founded in 1965. Its mission is to empower individuals, strengthen families, and build communities through education and self-reliance programs. Utah Community Action supports approximately 50,000 children and families each year and provides services such as early childhood education, homeless prevention, and workforce development, and it engages volunteers in Head Start classrooms and at the Central Kitchen, including group volunteering for companies or organizations. This program is supported by Grant Numbers 08HP000278, 08HP000588, and 08CH011914 from the Office of Head Start within the Administration for Children and Families, a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and Utah Community Action is an equal opportunity provider. One Head Start graduate, Sofia Ortega-Flores, states that the Head Start program inspired her to continue serving others through education and that her family has been empowered and motivated to endure through adversity.
