The Living Earth School has been offering immersive nature-based education programs in central Virginia since 2002. It is a nature connection and mentoring nonprofit organization that draws from both ancient and modern wisdom and offers programs for children, teens, and adults. Its mission as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization is to nurture and deepen relationships with nature, ourselves, and our communities, expressed as “Earth Care, People Care.” The program cultivates a culture at camp that builds community and fosters nature connection to a living earth, and teaches skills related to shelter, fire, water, food, and awareness of surroundings, with programs offered without digital diversions or extraneous activities. Living Earth School is located on the homeland of the Monacan people, in what is now central Virginia and part of the James River watershed.
Living Earth School has been voted as a favorite Charlottesville day camp and overnight camp. It is a proud partner of 1% for the Planet. One parent notes that, in their child’s experience, everyone at Living Earth School wants to be there. Another parent describes it as an important part of shaping who their 11-year-old son is, and says he feels at home in nature and is genuinely cared for and inspired by the staff. A long-time observer states that over decades, Living Earth School has fostered an ever-deepening relationship with nature for children, teens, adults, and families, and refers to research indicating that time in nature supports physical, emotional, and mental health.
