Encore Stage & Studio was founded in 1967 as The Children’s Theatre of Arlington. Its mission is to inspire young people to develop the creativity, empathy and confidence they need to create meaningful connections with peers and have a positive impact in their communities. All classes are taught by professional educators and artists with a passion for working with children.
The program describes its productions as “Theatre for Kids, by Kids,” with every actor and backstage crew member under 18 years of age, and middle and high school students serving on the front-of-house team. Participation in productions is entirely free, and no child has to pay to participate in productions. Encore produces eight fully-staged productions each year, offers a year-long apprentice position, and provides multiple summer internships for college students and recent graduates. Encore original plays are available for licensing, and the organization offers need-based scholarships to all of its education programs, as well as reserved seating for performances unless otherwise noted as general admission.
Encore Stage & Studio frequently partners with local schools and PTAs throughout the northern Virginia area to bring programs directly to their students. The organization was nationally recognized in 2017 with the Twink Lynch Organizational Achievement Award from the American Association of Community Theatres, has been a featured non-profit in Catalogue for Philanthropy: Greater Washington since 2010, and participates in the federal government’s Combined Federal Campaign. It receives grant funding from the Virginia Commission for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Arlington Cultural Affairs division of Arlington Economic Development, and the Arlington Commission for the Arts.
Audience feedback includes comments such as “So inspiring! We loved this kid/teen cast & crew led production of The Lion King...” from 4DMV Kids, “For the youngster set, Encore is the region’s gold standard...” from the Sun Gazette, and “The quality of the show is made all the more remarkable by how much its youthful participants drive the show.” from the Prince George’s Sentinel. Concessions can be purchased and enjoyed in the lobby before the show and during intermission.
