About
Highland Retreat Summer Camps offers summer youth camps that include activities such as soccer, 9-square, biking, evenings by the fire, and use of the ropes course and Challenge Course. The program takes place at a Christian retreat center and summer youth camp that also hosts youth retreats, church retreats and campouts, school group retreats, family reunions, and other group events.
Highland Retreat Summer Camps is part of a non-profit, year-round Christian retreat center whose mission is to offer a mountain setting where people meet Jesus Christ, explore nature and build relationships. The summer youth camps are open to all children regardless of race, color, national origin, gender, or in some cases disability. The broader facility also hosts Banquet events, volunteer work days, and activities such as wood splitting and work days.
Highland Retreat is closely affiliated with Virginia Mennonite Conference of Mennonite Church USA and maintains membership with Christian Camp and Conference Association USA and the Mennonite Camping Association. The organization serves churches, families, individuals, and groups from the Shenandoah Valley, Northern Virginia, the Eastern West Virginia panhandle, and beyond, whose interests are compatible with its mission, values, and the Christian faith. Highland Retreat’s leadership team includes facilities manager Nate Howman, who has served in that role since 2021 and will be ending his service by the end of 2025.
Parents and group leaders have shared feedback about their experiences at Highland Retreat. A school group doing the Challenge Course in July 2025 described their ropes coordinator as outstanding and noted that he helped the kids through the course, pushed them outside their comfort zone, and took time afterwards to help them process the experience. A church youth retreat in Red Oak Lodge in June 2025 reported that their kids enjoyed outdoor activities, including playing a lot of soccer and 9-square, and that the meeting spaces worked well for their group. Other groups, including church retreats, church campouts, and family gatherings, have commented on enjoying the setting, the ability to gather together, and the staff’s friendliness and professionalism.
