Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeast Virginia has been serving youth across its region for more than 100 years. The organization’s mission is “To enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.” The leadership team includes Kevin Will, President & CEO, and Volunteer & Donor Engagement Coordinator, Steve Gray. Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeast Virginia is a comprehensive youth service organization that thanks its national and local partners and invites employers to participate in matching gift programs. The organization states that membership is open to all young people ages 6 through 18 and that its youth development programs emphasize career and academic preparedness, healthy lifestyles, and good character and citizenship, with three priority outcomes of Academic Success, Good Character & Citizenship, and Healthy Lifestyles; it also offers the Healthy Habits program for ages 6 to 15 as the Mind component of Triple Play: A Game Plan for the Mind, Body and Soul. The organization sends a newsletter once per month.
Kevin Will, President & CEO, describes the Clubs as a place where members discover their talents, build confidence, and dream bigger, and as a second home where great futures are shaped, leaders are born, and hope becomes reality. He also states that every child, regardless of race, religion, ethnic heritage, physical or mental abilities, sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression, should have equal access to a safe place to grow, quality mentors, opportunities to explore, and tools to achieve their dreams. Alumnus Caleb Jones shares that he started attending the Club at eight years old, that his social life improved, he made many friends, and he was introduced to his favorite sport, football; he credits the Club with helping him stay on the right path, surrounding him with role models, and providing academic help that supported him in thriving in high school. He reports earning All-Region, All-Tidewater, and All-State honors three times, being selected Conference Defensive Player of the Year, finishing his senior season with 88 tackles, 47 tackles for loss, and 13 sacks while helping lead Oscar Smith to back-to-back Class 6A State Championships, graduating with a 3.9 GPA, receiving a scholarship to play Defensive Line at North Carolina A & T where he majored in Applied Psychology, and continuing his football career at Boston College, and he thanks the Club and staff for pushing him to be the best version of himself.
