STEPS Head Start & Childcare is an early childhood education program serving infants, toddlers, and preschool age children. It offers a variety of program options including Head Start, Early Head Start, Mixed Delivery, subsidized childcare, and private pay childcare, with some programs available at no or low cost. One application for enrollment is used to determine program options. STEPS Head Start serves children from Amelia, Appomattox, Buckingham, Charlotte, Cumberland, Lunenburg, and Prince Edward counties, and provides early childhood education services to preschool age children 3–5 in Amelia, Appomattox, Buckingham, Charlotte, Lunenburg, Nottoway, and Prince Edward Counties. STEPS Early Head Start serves pregnant women and their families, infants, and toddlers in Amelia, Charlotte, Lunenburg, and Prince Edward counties, and provides early childhood education services to infants and toddlers ages 6 weeks–36 months. The STEPS Expectant Mothers Program serves pregnant women and their families and uses a research-based curriculum that helps mom and the family prepare for baby, and staff assist mom with aspects of prenatal and postpartum care. Little Movers Childcare offers preschool and childcare services to families who do not qualify for Head Start or Early Head Start services, and Little Movers slots are available at the Longwood Avenue and Layne Street locations. Families receive the same comprehensive services in any of the classrooms.

Mixed Delivery is state funded childcare with a parent co-payment that will not exceed 7% of their income, and parents must be employed to qualify for Mixed Delivery services. STEPS offers slots in Prince Edward through Mixed Delivery and is a subsidized childcare provider in Prince Edward and Charlotte Counties. STEPS also offers a private childcare option in Farmville, VA, and staff will assist parents to maximize funding supports.
