The Living Earth School has been offering immersive nature-based education programs in central Virginia since 2002. Its mission is to renew connections with the earth, care for the earth, and build healthy relationships with nature, self, and community. The organization is a nonprofit that draws from both ancient and modern wisdom and offers programs for children, teens, and adults, ranging from one-day workshops to long-term immersive courses for adults.

Programs at The Living Earth School are held without digital diversions or extraneous activities and include curriculum elements such as naturalist skills, survival skills, animal tracking, edible and medicinal plants, and understanding the language of birds. The program uses coyote mentoring in a nature-based approach, teaches skills related to shelter, fire, water, food, and awareness of surroundings, and seeks to create a “village community” where everyone feels safe and welcomed. The organization is located on the homeland of the Monacan people in what is now central Virginia, part of the James River watershed, and is committed to a culture of inclusivity and connectedness through including diverse voices, perspectives, and backgrounds. Living Earth School is also a proud partner of 1% for the Planet.

One homeschool student shared that at The Living Earth School, “everyone wants to be there.” A parent, Caroline P., described it as an “incredible camp” where her son feels at home in nature, is genuinely cared for, and is inspired by the staff.
