River Mountain Farm and Life Center is run by Simon and Janine Aberg. Janine holds a BA in Performing Arts from the University of the Nations and an MA in Conflict Transformation from Eastern Mennonite University’s Center for Justice and Peacebuilding. Their horsemanship programs emphasize timing, feel, and balance, both at liberty and under saddle, and integrate positive horsemanship, mindfulness, and meditative practices. The program’s stated vision is to inspire a generation of people and horses to pursue wholeness and self-actualization through authentic connection with themselves, others, and God, and its mission is to create harmony in all activities. Methods at the farm combine equine engagement, education, art, movement, interaction, and meditation, and the programs are centered on reconnecting with nature and the simple rhythms of life. River Mountain Farm & Life Center LLC offers experiences that include art, horsemanship, dance, yoga, and wellness sessions, and the work is described as being fueled by gratitude, mindfulness, and a desire to build relationships based on joy rather than force. Janine has traveled to over 40 countries, and the family does not own a television.
Janine’s art is described as an expression of the soul of life, and her work at the farm includes murals, body painting, portraiture, landscapes, live art, and custom pieces. She has painted murals in homes, churches, and businesses across South Africa, Hawaii, and Virginia, including projects for Dick Myers, Sentara RMH Wellness Center, and J. Frank Hillyard Middle School. Janine has received awards at the Kona Coffee Cultural Festival and the Waimea Arts Council in Hawaii, completed a residency with Philadelphia Mural Arts, and exhibited work during the 2012 Olympic Games in the UK. Janine and Simon spent ten years in Hawaii before living in the Shenandoah Valley.
