Summer Safari Day Camp is a behind-the-scenes day camp that takes place at the Metro Richmond Zoo. The program gives campers access to behind-the-scenes areas as part of their day camp experience.
• Ages: 6–13 years old
• Schedule: Select Dates Summer 2026; the zoo is open Monday–Saturday from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM
The Metro Richmond Zoo participates in many conservation programs around the world to help save endangered and threatened animals like the cheetah, African penguin, and Diana monkey. Unique features at the zoo include the African Penguin Experience in the penguin ambassador habitat, the Treetop Zoofari zipline and adventure park, opportunities to feed budgie birds, giraffes, camels, barnyard animals, and more, rides and attractions such as a train, skylift, drop tower, carousel, and kid’s playland, a safari train ride, and the Miracle of Christmas – Live at the Zoo holiday performances. Metro Richmond Zoo received recognition at the 2025 Zoological Association of America Conference.
Parents and visitors have shared many reviews about the zoo. Brandon described it as having a fantastic array of animal species, being clean and family friendly, and said his family plans to visit again. Earle called it a Richmond gem with friendly animals and great staff. Nathan said it is an interactive zoo with plenty of animals to see and learn about and called it perfect for a family visit. Chelsey said the zoo is always adding and upgrading, and that her family has season passes and visited seven times in one year. Bri said the animals are active and happy, the staff is amazing, and her kids love the zoo. Candice said the zoo was amazing and the zip line was fantastic. James said it has a great atmosphere and offers a chance to be close to beautiful animals. Jen described feeding the giraffes, riding the safari train, and said prices are affordable. Ryan said the staff was friendly and knowledgeable, the zoo was clean, and the animals were very interactive. Katherine said there is a large variety of animals and exhibits and recommended buying zoo treats. Shakola said visits become more enjoyable as kids get older because they interact more with the animals, ask questions, and want to go on the rides. Sara said check-in was fast with online tickets, that feeding the birds was her kids’ favorite part, and that she plans to return. Sierra said her family has a membership and that her son loves it. Jill said her family has annual passes, has visited six times in a year, and that the zoo staff is wonderful.
