About
Summer Safari Day Camp is a behind-the-scenes day camp where campers take part in activities such as feeding budgie birds, giraffes, camels, and barnyard animals. The program includes chances to ride the train, skylift, drop tower, and carousel, and to explore the new kid’s playland. Campers also have access to the Treetop Zoofari zipline and adventure park as part of the experience.
• Ages: 6–13 years old
• Schedule: Select dates in Summer 2026; the zoo is open Monday–Saturday from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM
The camp takes place at Metro Richmond Zoo and includes access to areas such as Hippo Haven, the Treetop Zoofari zipline and adventure park, and the penguin ambassador habitat. The zoo is home to animals representing species from around the world and offers the African Penguin Experience, where visitors step into the penguin ambassador habitat for an up-close experience with African penguins, a critically endangered species. The Metro Richmond Zoo participates in conservation programs around the world to help save endangered and threatened animals like the cheetah, African penguin, and Diana monkey, and it has received a national award and announced a $50,000 donation to pygmy hippo conservation at a national zoo conference. Miracle of Christmas – Live at the Zoo is noted as one of Richmond’s holiday traditions and is returning for its 23rd year.
Parents and visitors have shared many reviews about the zoo, including comments that it is “clean, family friendly, and the animals are well cared for having more spacious and natural enclosures than I’ve seen at other zoos” and that it is a “Richmond gem” with “friendly animals” and “great staff.” Other reviewers describe it as a “great interactive zoo with plenty of animals to see and learn about,” and note that “the zoo is always adding and upgrading” and “it never gets old.” Several families mention repeat visits and memberships, with one parent saying, “We have season passes and have visited seven times this year!” and another stating, “We have a membership and my son loves it right now!” Reviewers also highlight specific experiences such as feeding the giraffes, feeding the birds, riding the safari train, and enjoying the zip line, with one visitor calling the zip line “fantastic” and another saying, “Feeding the birds was my kids favorite part.”
