About

Richmond Academy of Ballet offers dance classes that include First Steps, Conservatory Prep/Youth, and Upper Levels/Conservatory, along with Contemporary Dance. In First Steps, students take part in gentle exercises and imaginative movement, learn spatial awareness, rhythm, balance, coordination, and the beginnings of ballet terminology, and are introduced to the great ballets as they dance their way into the stories. In the older levels, classes become more challenging and focused, students work on shaping their bodies, gaining strength, flexibility, and musicality, Contemporary Dance is introduced, and in the Upper Levels/Conservatory, pointe work is introduced gradually and movements gain amplitude and speed as students blend Classical and Contemporary Dance. The program also presents The Nutcracker 2025 with six performances, each with unique choreography and different casts, featuring dancers from youngest 3-year-olds to Conservatory Pro performers.

• Ages: 3–18 years old
• Schedule: Classes started in September.

Richmond Academy of Ballet offers First Steps for ages 3–6 years old, Conservatory Prep/Youth for ages 7–12 years old, and Upper Levels/Conservatory for ages 11 and up. Games and play are used in Conservatory Prep/Youth as needed to preserve the joy of learning. The directors of Richmond Academy of Ballet are Michelle and Jack, a married couple who state that they have devoted their lives to the art of classical ballet and that Richmond Academy of Ballet is their Magnum Opus. Their mission is to inspire generation after generation to see more beauty in the world and then to find their own contribution to it.

The Nutcracker 2025 will be the 5th season of The Nutcracker at Richmond Academy of Ballet, with six performances described as magical, each with unique choreography and different casts. Richmond Academy of Ballet is beginning preparations to bring the school to Paris in 2026, where students will study with Parisian ballet masters, learn new choreography, study at the Paris Opera, and finish their trip with a performance in Paris. The directors continued their own education at the Paris Opera this past summer. A free class is offered, and parents are invited to schedule a free class.

If a child is between the ages of 1 and 7, parents can enroll based on age, and if a child has experience in dance and is aged 6 and up, parents are instructed to click “Get Started” for placement help.
