Mill Mountain Theatre Education Programs are part of Mill Mountain Theatre, which has produced the national hit “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten” and the American premiere of “Children of Eden.” The theatre’s Norfolk Southern Festival of New Works has served as an annual home for winners of the Mill Mountain Theatre New Play Competition and now showcases notable playwrights such as Sherry Kramer, Jeffrey Stanley, Julie Jensen, Tom Ziegler, Jim Henry, and Robert Caisley. Mill Mountain Theatre was established as a summer stock theatre in 1964, adopted the name Mill Mountain Theatre with the opening of Center in the Square in 1983, and has served the region and the industry for more than 50 years. The organization describes its mission as creating meaningful theatrical experiences that entertain, inspire, and educate, producing live performances and arts education as the professional theatre of Virginia’s Blue Ridge. It states that it celebrates Southwest Virginia’s unique character, builds partnerships that make theatre relevant, impactful, and inclusive, and exists for and with its community. Mill Mountain Theatre is described as one of the most respected regional theatres in the United States. The leadership team includes Executive Director Matt Shields, Director of Education Francesca Reilly, Resident Music Director Cindy Blevins, Conservatory Music Director Bethany Costello, Resident Teaching Artist Eli Riedrich, and Director of Production Savannah Woodruff, along with additional administrative, production, and board leaders.
