Hearthstone School Programs is Waldorf inspired and uses a curriculum that blends traditional and innovative elements with many modalities and activities such as field investigations, drama, drawing, movement, and music. The program extends from Nursery/Kindergarten through 12th grade and includes Parent-Child Classes and part-time enrollment, with small classes that provide individualized instruction. Hearthstone was founded in 1996 as a parent cooperative, and some founding members, teachers, and parents were affiliated with Spring Mountain Waldorf School for nine years before Hearthstone began. The school moved to its current site in 2000, completed renovations to the first floor of the main school building in 2004, and finished renovations to the lower level of the main school building in the fall of 2005. The campus includes a main school building, a lower school building for Nursery through Second Grades, a pottery studio, a large Community Room, the Rainbow Market, therapy offices, a school administration office, classrooms, a music room, an arts and crafts room, a library, and a kiln room. Hearthstone welcomes students of every race, color, gender, religion, ethnicity, or national origin.

According to the mission statement, Hearthstone School nurtures and educates the whole child and is committed to developing each child's ability to feel deeply, think clearly, and act purposefully. The mission states that the curriculum brings academics to life through the arts and the natural world, and that students practice life skills such as mindfulness meditation and conflict resolution. The mission further states that all children are honored, that each child is regarded as a powerful and precious force of Being in need of guidance, protection, inspiration, and nurturing, and that teachers work respectfully and deliberately to support students' intellectual, physical, emotional, and spiritual growth. The mission describes a focus on responsibility, cooperation, respect for others, reverence for nature, a sense of unity with all life, and the right of every child to a happy childhood, as well as an emphasis on inner harmony, centeredness, and becoming a free-thinking, purpose-driven, conscientious, happy adult who values wholeness and peace of mind over material fulfillment.

Hearthstone School Programs draws students from a six-county area that includes Rappahannock, Culpeper, Fauquier, Madison, Warren, and Page counties. Children see their parents involved in the daily life of the school and participate in the wider community through service projects.

Parent testimonials describe children eager to attend a school that “embraces who kids are,” with teachers described as patient and enthusiastic. One parent calls Hearthstone “a safe place for children to learn and exist,” and another describes the school as a “guiding light and gold standard” compared with other schools their family has experienced.
